How to Build Experience When You Have No Experience

Employers ask for experience because it reduces risk. Realistic projects, written up clearly and checked against clear criteria, reduce the same risk.

"Two years' experience required" is the most frustrating line in any job advert when you are changing careers. It helps to understand what it really means. An employer asking for experience is asking for reassurance that you can do the work without them carrying all the risk.

What experience actually proves

Experience shows three things: you can do the core tasks, you can work through problems that are messy and incomplete, and you can explain what you did. You can show all three without having held the job title.

Choose realistic projects

A good practice project looks like real work. It has a business question, imperfect data or requirements, a deadline and an audience. "Why are customers cancelling, and what should we do about it?" is better than "analyse this clean dataset". Use public or synthetic data; never use confidential information from your current employer.

Work to clear criteria

Decide in advance what good looks like: is the answer correct, is the method sound, are the limitations stated, could a non-specialist act on it? Checking your own work against criteria like these is a habit employers value. Having an experienced practitioner review it against the same criteria is stronger still.

Write it up

For each project, write a short summary: the question, what you did, what you found, what you would do next and what you would do differently. Hiring managers rarely have time to open every file; a clear write-up gets read.

Count your previous career

Your earlier work is experience too, just in a different context. Combine it with your projects: "I have handled sensitive patient records for ten years; here is a data-protection review I carried out on a sample dataset." That is a credible answer to "do you have experience?"
